The truth is, improper packing is one of the leading causes of damage during a house move. Flimsy boxes buckle and split. Items packed without adequate cushioning shift and collide in transit. The Right Boxes

It’s also worth thinking about size. Heavy items like books should always go into smaller boxes to keep the weight manageable. Lighter items like duvets, cushions, and bedding can go into larger boxes without posing a lifting risk. And for your clothes and hanging garments, specialist wardrobe boxes are a game-changer — they allow you to transfer your clothing straight from the rail without creasing or folding, so unpacking becomes a breeze.
Bubble Wrap
Bubble wrap is indispensable for protecting fragile items. It creates a cushioning barrier that absorbs shocks and vibrations during transit, making it ideal for everything from ornaments and picture frames to mirrors and electrical equipment.
Standard bubble wrap (around 500mm wide) is perfect for wrapping smaller items and protecting surfaces from scratches and chips. Larger rolls (750mm wide) are better suited to oversized pieces and can be used to line the inside of boxes for added protection. Packing Paper and Tissue Paper

When stacking plates, wrap each one individually and then group them in bundles of four or five, always placing them on their side in the box rather than flat — this significantly reduces the risk of cracking. Glasses should be individually wrapped and stood upright, with any gaps in the box filled with scrunched packing paper to prevent movement.
For your most precious pieces — silverware, jewellery, or stainless steel items — acid-free tissue paper is the gold standard. It prevents tarnishing and keeps delicate metals in perfect condition throughout the move.
Heavy-Duty Packing Tape (and a Dispenser!)
If there’s one place not to scrimp, it’s on packing tape. Lightweight tape simply isn’t up to the job — it can peel away from damp or dusty surfaces, leaving boxes vulnerable to splitting open at the worst possible moment.
Invest in proper heavy-duty, industrial-strength packing tape and use plenty of it: along the seams, along the bottom, and across any joins. A tape dispenser might seem like a small luxury, but anyone who has spent ten frustrating minutes searching for the end of a roll mid-pack will tell you it’s absolutely worth it.
Marker Pens and Labels
This one is often overlooked, but it can make the difference between a smooth unpacking experience and complete chaos. Label every box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs in. Write it large, and mark any boxes containing fragile items prominently on all four sides and the top.
